I received this update from Mike Cox via email today (1-25-10)
The Fight For Our Great Lakes Continues Last week we received the unfortunate news that the US Supreme Court denied an emergency motion closing Chicago-area locks that connect carp-infested waters with the Great Lakes. Closing the locks will prevent the waterborne alien from entering our waters. Refusing to close the locks allows the invasive species called Asian carp to continue knocking on Lake Michigan's door, threatening the Great Lakes region's $7 billion fishing industry and over 800,000 Michigan jobs. Unfortunately, the Obama administration continues to support the narrow interests of the President's home state and is trying to block our request. The same day the Court declined our request for an immediate injunction, the US Army Corps of Engineers released data showing carp DNA found in the Great Lakes. So today I sent a letter, along with a bipartisan group of Attorneys General from other Great Lakes states, renewing our request for an emergency meeting with the White House on the carp crisis. I am also working with Michigan's Congressional delegation led by Congressman Dave Camp, Congressman Vern Ehlers, Congresswoman Candice Miller, Senator Debbie Stabenow and Senator Carl Levin. I will do everything I can to stop this invasive species from invading our Great Lakes. |
