Kitchi-ossining Nature Preserve, (formally the Big Rock Nuclear Plant). I provided an active leadership role in a grass roots effort to convert 400 acres and 1.5 miles of shoreline on Northern Lake Michigan to a public owned nature preserve. This project began while I was the local Township Supervisor in 2004. Starting with three local citizens this effort has grown into a partnership of Federal, Tribal, State, County and Township governments. This has taken considerable skills including: coalition building, vision casting and persuasive reasoning. Completion of this conversion will have an historic impact demonstrating our ability to safely return a site used for one of our most dangerous forms of energy production into an unrestricted green state open for the enjoyment of all people.

As a leader of a local faith based group, I created a breakout strategy for a homeless shelter in Charlevoix. We cast a vision for the group to use member churches as overnight shelters. This moved the community from discussing to doing. We incorporated as an Ecclesiastical nonprofit, trained volunteers, and engaged a half dozen churches as host churches. We created a methodology for servicing guests and established alliances with other community groups. We eventually rented a flat from the Alano Club and provided meals and overnight shelter at a fixed location.

With the encouragement of the Frey Foundation, our community pool began the process of obtaining long term substantial tax support from the local units of government. During the two terms as President of the Pool Board, I led a group of volunteers that won the approval of two townships and the City of Charlevoix to establish a Recreational Authority. Once this was done we were able to begin the process of getting a millage request on the general election ballot. With the choice now in the people’s hands we embarked on a six month education campaign explaining the history, the services offered and the benefits to the community of the pool. We were successful and will receive over one and one half million dollars in the next ten years. Watch our video.
